Course Objective

The aim of the course is to explain principles governing the types of pavements and design processes. Data sets will be analyzed that should be used in design.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Clasification of the pavements with details
2   To be able to compare the superiority of pavement types according to each other technically and economically
3   To be able to examine the road superstructure and the deterioration of the road superstructure
4   To examine design process criteria with details
5   To solve each superstructure projecting method with examples

1 General information, definitions, objectives of highway an runway, flexible and rigid pavement cross sections
2 Arranging of wheel loads, design process criteria for flexible pavements, traffic and axle loads, design strategies
3 Distress on flexible pavements, theory of flexible pavement, layered system concepts
4 One layer system, two layer systems, three layer systems
5 Design process, subgrade stress
6 Vehicle and traffic consideration, fixed traffic versus fixed vehicle
7 MIDTERM EXAM
8 Determination of equivalent wheel loads and Calculation of equivalent wheel loads, equivalent axle loads
9 Design of flexible highway pavements, design strategies, group index method
10 CBR method, AASHTO method and applications
11 Rigid pavements, distress of pavements, rigid pavements and airport pavements
12 Transverse joints, longitudinal joints
13 Design of rigid highway pavements
14 Homework submission and presentations and general discussions
