Course Objective

The aim of the course is to provide fundamental concepts for the analysis and design of embankment dams.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to comprehend basic principles in the design of embankment dams.
2   To be able to comprehend the methods of stability analysis of embankment dams.
3   To be able to apply the procedures for seepage evaluation.
4   To be able to calculate pore pressures during and at the end of construction, during steady state seepage and rapid drawdown cases.
5   To be able to analyse the stability of an embankment dam.
6   To be able to interpret the results of engineering analysis.

1 FUNDAMENTALS OF EMBANKMENT DAM DESIGN: Advantages, functions, choice of cross section.
2 Types : Earth fill, rock fill and hydraulic fill dams
3 Failures and damages of embankment dams
4 Seepage and flow net construction. Announcement of homework.
5 Pore pressure evaluations
6 METHOD OF STABILITY ANALYSIS: Conventional methods of stability analysis
7 Conventional methods of stability analysis (continued).
8 2D computer analysis
9 Midterm examination.
10 ANALYSIS OF STABILITY IN PRACTICAL CASES: During and at the end of construction
11 Steady-state seepage and sudden drawdown conditions
12 Seismic design
13 Seismic design (following)
14 General evaluation and discussion

A textbook is not required for this course. Supplemental materials will be provided.
Materials: Course notes and in class applications.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course topics will be presented and applications will be performed in class for the enhancement of the subjects. Students will prepare a report on the analyses done with individually assigned data about stability analysis of an embankment dam.
