Course Objective

The aim of the course is to emphasize the importance of the protection of surface fresh water resources and their use in terms of sustainability. The national and EU s legislation on the quality and quantity protection of fresh water resources are the main features of the course. The education of the general concepts upon these issues is the main target of the course. Wastewater treatment plants are also chosen as a subject.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To qualify the surface water according to Turkish Water quality control directive quality standards.
2   To assess the impacts of drought, water shortage and water quality on water utilization.
3   To interpret the current legislations regarding water pollution control, protection of the quality and quantity of surface.
4   To predict the impact of wastewater discharged to receiving media.
5   To understand the threat of human activities on the quality and quantity of available water resources.
6   To distinguish the measures to be taken in order to improve the quality and quantity conditions of water resources.

13 Optimization methods used in determination of WTP s locations
14 The operational principles of wastewater systems (Sewers, treatment plants etc.)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The main teaching method is the comprehensive explanations of graphical presentations which are uploaded to Lecturer s personal web page. The students are demanded weekly to read and study the available Lecture notes and presentations before their attendance. Meanwhile, at least to experts from engaged NGO s and wastewater treatment sector are invited to present their positions and sensitivity in water resources protection.
