Course Objective

The main purpose of the lecture is to outline the basic principles of coastal engineering, to present the utilization possibilities of coastal areas, and to teach the fundamental principles of design procedures for coastal structures and ports.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to identify coastal engineering problems
2   Ability to interpret atmospheric phenomena and interactions among land, sea, and air that occur at the coast
3   Ability to predict human-induced and natural factors that affect coast and coastal structures
4   Ability for determining both qualitative and quantitative features of the forces that influence coastal structures
5   Ability to evaluate processes in the planning of harbors
6   Ability to develop and implement realistic project plans for integrated coastal zone management

4 Wind Waves (Fetch, Wind Direction, Speed and Duration); Wave Forecasting (Developing Sea; Fully Arisen Sea)
5 Wave Transformation (Shoaling, Refraction, Diffraction, Breaking and Reflection)
6 Types and Function of Marine Structures; Shore Protection Structures and Techniques
7 Harbor Structures; Breakwaters; Berthing/mooring structures
