Course Objective

The course objective is to provide basic knowledge on physical/mechanical/chemical properties of materials, manufacturing processes, behaviour of the material, and appropriate material selection.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define mechanical properties of materials
2   Define physical properties of materials
3   Express the behaviour of the materials under stress and strain
4   Define the properties of ennginerring materials (metals and alloys, plastics, ceramide and glass, bituminous materials)
5   Define the basic concepts of cement and aggregates
6   Distinguish different types of cement and concrete classes

3 Mechanical properties of materials (stress-strain concept)
4 Mechanical properties of materials (hardness, abrasion, strength)
5 The physical and chemical properties of materials
6 Metals and alloys, ceramics and glass materials Selection of assignment topics (assignments will be on materials used in the field of environmental engineering , and construction materials)
7 Plastics, bituminous materials
8 Mid-term exam
9 Binding materials (pozzolan, lime, gypsum)
10 Binding materials (cement)
11 Aggregate (physical properties, grading-granulometry concept)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lecture presentations supported by visual presentations (slides, photographs, materials, etc) will be achieved, numerical problems will be solved; discussion platform will be done to make clear the subject. Online education tools will be used.
