Course Objective

This course will provide the student with the underlying principles and techniques of lean manufacturing particularly classification of the production systems, value stream mapping-analysis, historical view of lean philosophy, basic principles of lean manufacturing, waste definition and types of waste, and tools of lean manufacturing 5S-SMED-TPM-JIT-KANBAN with emphasis on their application in the production.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To provide students the ability to determine necessary of lean evaluation in the company
2   To provide students the ability to determine Value-Added activity of the production.
3   To provide students the ability to use a new Value stream mapping from the old one.
4   To provide students the ability to use continuous process improvement.
5   Transition the traditional layout to the cellular manufacturing system.
6   To provide students the ability to apply the technics of lean manufacturinng.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and take part in the discussion sessions. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned for that week and presented to open a discussion session.

Assessment Criteria

There will be minimum 2 projects, averaged out grades for which will be 15 % of the overall success of the students. mid-term examinations will be averaged and affect the grade by 35 %. Final exam will be 50 % of the resulting grade.
