Course Objective

Understanding of the EIA process that the mining activities are subject to, Understanding of the information to be included in the EIA and PTD, Understanding of the incomplete and wrong processes in the application, the understanding of mining activities and their outcomes with respect to Environmental Engineering perspective

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knowing the different groups of minerals, the legal legislation applied for the disposal of wastes arising from these activities
2   Know the basic analyzes required to determine the basic properties of mine waste and evaluate the results of these analyzes
3   Know the environmental effects of acid mine drainage, sequential analysis processes for determining AMD, evaluate the results, choose the appropriate final disposal method, evaluate reuse possibilities
4   The EIA process to be implemented for mining activities is known, the diffrence between PTD and the EIA report , the necessary components of these reports and required knowlodge are known
5   Generate a PTD report on mining activities in general terms

1 Explanation of mining groups, Mining Law, Examination of materials related to waste management within the scope of Mining Law, MENR-MIGEM and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization relations
2 An overview of the rates of abundance in the Earth's crust, grade, mining economy, production and waste disposal costs Project work
3 Mining Waste Regulation, Inert waste, Non-hazardous waste, Hazardous waste concepts
4 Mine waste types, differences with each other, sources, overview of physical and chemical enrichment, methods of forming waste, disposal status before regulation, waste amount / product ratio
5 Calculation of waste volume and mass Acid Mine Drainage, formation, Thiobacillus spp. and effects on acid mine drainage Project work
6 Assessment of mining activities according to capacity and production quantities in EIA process, activities subject to PTD and EIA report
7 I. Midterm
8 PTD and EIA report components in mining activities, differences between them, EIA Custom format, problems in implementation Project work
9 Geochemical analyzes in mine tailings, sulfur content, carbonates Acid base accounting, standard and dynamic leaching tests

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Within the scope of the course, directives related to waste management within the scope of Mining and Environment legislation will be given, general and detailed analysis parameters to be applied for determination of the characteristics of mine waste will be given, understanding of the results of these analyzes will be ensured and discussions will be made to ensure that the student has knowledge about the selection of disposal and evaluation methods. especially the issues to be taken into consideration in the appropriate reports for the specific form
