Course Objective

The course objective is to design an appropriate water treatment plant for achieving water demand of any settlement.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Decide on an appropriate treatment methods considering to the water characteristics
2   To calculate the dimensions of selected drinking water treatment units
3   To calculate the capacity of mechanical equipment
4   To draw plan and cross-section views of the treatment units
5   To draw P&I diagram of designed system,
6   To draw the general layout of the units

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 General description of the project; Distribution of the project data to the groups
2 Capacity calculation; Evaluation of the staging alternatives
3 To create the flow chart alternatives; To decide the process that will be design
4 Design of screening or sieving system,
5 Design of cascade system (dimensions, number of cascade units, details of water inlet and outlet structure, etc.)
6 Design of pre-sedimentation tank (dimensions, number of the sedimentation tanks, drawings of the plan and cross-sections, details of water inlet and outlet structure, etc.)
7 Design of coagulation tank (dimensions and number of tank, mixing equipment, drawings of the plan and cross-sections, details of water inlet and outlet structure, etc.)
8 Control
9 Design of flocculation tank (dimensions and number of tank, mechanic equipment selection, paddle design, drawings of the plan and cross-sections, details of water inlet and outlet structure, etc.)
10 Design of rapid or slow sand filters (dimensions, number of the filters, installation, filter bed inlet-outlet details, etc.)

Lecture presentations supported by visual presentations (slides, photographs, materials, etc) will be achieved, dimensions of the units, detailed drawings and mechanical equipment selection will be controlled at project meetings, and technical guidance will be done.
