Course Objective

- Acquire the ability to comprehend any written texts related with maritime business and international logistics including chartering related telex messages
- Summarize what he/she has understood in such reading activities
- Write business letters particularly concerning international trade and logistics
- Complete the basic maritime related documents such as Bill of Ladings and Charter Parties
- Orally carry out business negotiations
All in all, be able to effectively use all the four language skills listening, speaking, reading and writing in maritime business and logistic issues.

1   Read and understand maritime business related articles appearing in the relevant journals and/or books
2   Summarize in oral and/or written forms what has been underlined in such readings
3   Fill out maritime business related forms and/or documents such as Bill of Ladings and Charter Parties
4   Carry out decent, clear and neat correspondences, communications in maritime business and logistics related activities
5   Carry out negotiations in maritime business

1 Focusing on pronunciation, mastering the phonetic sounds, weak and strong stresses
2 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Anticipation and guessing the meanings in context
3 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Reading between line, drawing conclusions, making inferences
4 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Developing dictionary using skills
5 Reviewing the basic reading/writing skills: Summarizing paragraphs and articles, finding main ideas and recognizing topic sentences
6 Reviewing the basic reading/writing skills: Enhancing the skill for summarizing, focusing on producing the summary through phrases rather than complete sentences
7 Midterm exam
8 Reviewing the basic reading/writing skills: Paraphrasing
9 Reviewing the basic listening skills: Summarizing, discussing and answering the questions about what has been listened to
10 Charter Party Clauses: Sentence analysis, distinguishing main clause / subordinate clause.
11 Charter Party Clauses (cont d): Focusing on sentence analysis as well as the maritime law terms.
12 Bill of Lading Clauses: Enhancing sentence analysis, simplifying long sentences.
13 Bill of Lading Clauses (cont d): Reviewing adjectives, adverbs and noun clauses
14 Chartering telex negotiations: Recognizing, abbreviations, comprehending telex messages

Rather than a fixed text book, for each session a file of material collection is made use of, gathered and compiled from certain proper sources particularly from the references suggested in the next box, depending upon the focus of each particular session.

Copies of the documents used in international trade as well as shipping and excerpts from the course books studied in the other maritime business related courses, e.g. Marketing Management, Maritime Economics, International Logistics, and Maritime Law and from such updated maritime business related journals as Seatrade Review, Maritime Policy and Management, Containerization International, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics, Fairplay, International Shipping Weekly, Lloyd s Ship Manager, Journal of Marketing, Seaway and Marine Policy.
