Course Objective

To give sufficient information about democracy, secularism and related terms. Students will notice the reflections of them to Religious Education. They will get knowledge about the development of modern education in Western countries and Turkey. In the lectures, the approaches and models of Religious Education in modern liberal, pluralistic and secular states will be shown

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   They will be able to define the democracy, secularism and similar terms
2   They will know the developments of democracy, secularism in our country
3   They will grasp the relation between religion and secularism in the current liberal societies
4   They will know the reflections of them to RE in democratic and pluralistic societies
5   They will be able to evaluate some approaches in new pluralistic Religious Education

4 The religion and Politics relation in the European Countries
5 The approaches of Religious Education in secular and laic European Countries
6 The development of modern education and democracy
7 Democratic laicism and Religious Education
8 Mid-term Exam
9 The approach of totalitarian laicism towards Religious Education
10 The development of modern education and democracy in the multi-party period
11 The constitutional articles in Turkey related to laicism, democracy and Religious Education
12 Pluralistic democracy and Religious Education
13 Pluralistic approaches of Religious Education
14 Religious Education, on the issues of Globalization and changing religious understandings
