Course Objective

the purpose of this course is to explain atomic structure, chemical bonding and intermolecular forces; to determine geometrical structure and symmetry properties, to discuss the conductivities of metal-semimetals and to investigate the concepts of acid-base.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the structure of the atom, determine the hybridization types, geometric shapes and symmetry properties of the molecules.
2   Define ionic, covalent and metallic bonds, apply theories and explain the electrical conductivity of metals.
3   Can examine common crystal types of ionic solids.
4   Examine intermolecular interactions and discuss their effects.
5   Can express acids and bases with different definitions, interpret their hardness and softness, and also determine the effect of solvents other than water on acid-base reactions.
