Course Objective

To introduce operations research methodology, to make the students to think about how organizations can perform in an effective way. Besides, teaching the methods for expressing the industrial problems as decision problems, identifying decision alternatives, and selecting the best decision alternative, and finally making economic interpretations.

1   Defining operations research methodology and techniques
2   Expressing the industrial problems as linear decision models
3   Identifying transportation and assignment problems
4   Applying solution methods of linear decision problems, transportation and assignment problems
5   Using operations research packages to find the solution of linear decision problems
6   Interpreting the results economically
7   Suggesting alternatives to optimize the concerned objective
8   Planning for using the sources optimum

2 Introduction to linear programming and the art of linear modeling
3 Examples of linear programming
4 Basic concepts of linear programming solutions, graphical method, special cases
5 Standard and normal form of an linear programming and the simplex algorithm, special cases
6 Big M method, Two-Pase Simplex Method
7 Dual simplex algorithm and computer applications
8 Mid-term exam
9 Duality and finding the dual model, Economic interpretation of dual variables
10 Sensitivity analysis for model parameters
11 Sensitivity analysis for structural changes
12 Methods to find the starting solution of transportation problems
13 Finding the optimum solution of transportation problems
14 Assignment model
