Course Objective

To make students to learn the basic concepts of biostatistics, to describe and apply methods that are used in biological data sets.

2   Distinguishing types of study designs in biostatistics,
3   Describing the relation in biostatistics,
4   Describing the biological data set,
5   Describing some special methods which are used for biological data ,
6   Calculating and interpreting the measures which are used for describing data.

1 Review of Statistics (Data, Variable, Sample, Population, Statistic, Parameter)
2 Basic Concepts and Applications of Biostatistics (Central Tendency and Variability, Graphs, Estimation, Hypothesis Testing)
3 Estimating and Comparing Means, Variances and Proportions in Medical Data
4 Contingency Tables in Medical Data and Chi-Square Test
5 General Considerations in Medical Research Design (Measures of Disease Frequency, Study Population, Exposure, Disease and Outcome, Risk Ratio, Rate Ratio, Odds Ratio)
6 Study Designs (Observational: Cross Sectional, Cohort and Case Control, Case Series)
7 Bias and Misclassification (Differential and Non-Differential)
8 Midterm Exam
9 The Confounding Effect (Crude and Stratified Odds Ratios, Common Odds Ratio: Mantel-Haenszel Test)
10 The Interaction Effect (Homogeneity of the Odds Ratio:Breslow Day Test)
11 Secreening Tests and ROC Curve (Sensitivity and Specificity)
12 Modelling Ouantitative Outcome Variables for Medical Research
13 Modelling Binary Outcome Variables for Medical Research (Logistic Regression Model: Logit Function, Likelihood Function, Maximum Lilkelihood Estimation)
