Course Objective

Quantum ideas is considered first to provide a framework for understanding the physics of atoms and nuclei. The theory of the atom is then developed with emphasis on quantum - mechanical notions. Next comes a discussion of the properties of aggregates of atoms, which includes a look at statistical mechanics. Finally atomic nuclei and elementary particles are examined.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   It is to understand mainly the physics of atoms and nuclei.
2   Being able to develop the theory of atom.
3   Being able to give quantum - mechanical notions.
4   Being able to discuss the properties of aggregates of atoms, which includes a look at statistical mechanics.
5   Being able to examine atomic nuclei and elementary particles.
