Course Objective

Aims of this course are to teach radiation sources, interactions of different radiation types with matter and radiation detection methods and to provide an introduction to radiation physics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to describe basic concepts of radiation dosimetry.
2   Being able to list biological effects of radiation.
3   Being able to arrange radiation protection methods.
4   Being able to classify the devices used for diagnostics and treatment purposes in medicine.
5   Being able to estimate the doses for charged particles and gamma radiation.
6   Being able to analyse the useful and harmful effects of radiation.
7   Being able to evaluate the application areas of radiation physics in medicine.

1 Radiation Dosimetry (Quantities and Units: activity, exposure dose, absorbed dose, dose equivalent)
2 Physical half time, biological half time, effective half time, relative biological effect, ALARA principle, collective dose
3 Measurement of exposure dose: Free-Air Ionization Chamber, The Air-Wall Chamber; Measurement of Absorbed Dose; Bragg-Gray principle, Measurement of X- and Gamma-Ray Dose; Dose Measurements for Charged-Particle Beams
4 Dose Calculations: Alpha and Low-Energy Beta Emitters Distributed in Tissue, Charged-Particle Beams, Point Source of Gamma Rays, concept of Kerma.
5 Chemical Effects of Radiation
6 Biological Effects of Radiation
7 Contamination and decontamination methods
8 Principles of Radiation Protection, dose limits and prevention
9 MID-TERM EXAM
10 Methods of External Radiation Protection
11 Methods of Internal Radiation Protection
12 Detection devices used for personel monitoring

2. Every trial to copying will be finalized with disciplinary proceedings.
3. The instructor has right to make practical quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
