Course Objective

Providing the prospective teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will let them translate different types of French texts into Turkish.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knowing the translation act.
2   Being able to explain the cognitive and linguistic stages of translation act.
3   Being able to explain the basic concepts of translation.
4   Being able to use dictionary and other supplementary resources.
5   Being able to use suitable translation techniques and strategies.
6   Being able to understand and comment different types of source texts and transfer them, appropriately to their meanings and functions, into the target language.
7   Being able to identify the translation issues and finding solutions to them.
8   Being able to evaluate and criticize a translation.

1 Definition of translation, its formation process and components.
2 Basic terms and concepts of translation: Verbal translation, free translation, equivalence, loss of meaning and style in translation
3 Correct and efficient use of dictionaries and other sources
4 Translation exercise: Informative text translation passages of news extracted from newspapers and magazines
5 Translation exercise: Informative text translation (continued)
6 Translation exercise: Scientific text translation
7 Translation exercise: Scientific text translation (continued)
8 General review, Course evaluation, Midterm exam
9 Translation exercise: Literary text translation Short story
