Course Objective

Introducing the domains of linguistics, the main subjects of investigation, the concepts and the main linguistic approaches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognition of the branches of linguistics, understanding the concepts of each branch
2   Learning the basic facts that linguistics studies
3   Recognition of the major linguistic structures and units
4   Recognition of main contemporary linguistic theories
5   Comprehension of typological properties of language groups
6   Learning the differences of language/dialect/mouth; the differences of oral language/written language

3 Morphology: lexical and grammatical monemes
4 Syntax: phrase (grammar)/utterance(grammar)
5 Syntax: phrase (grammar)/utterance(grammar)
6 Semantics: meaning; synonym/ antonymy/polysemy/ homonymy
7 Pragmatics: Language and performance; linguistic activity- subject-context
8 General review, Course evaluation, Midterm exam
9 Linguistic typology: synthetic languages, agglutinative languages, isolating languages
10 Language/ dialect/ mouth/pidjin/idyolekte, etc
11 Language policies
12 Oral language/written language
13 Generative grammar: Chomsky; Functional grammar: Martinet
14 Final exam
