Course Objective

The main aim of this course is to teach students the basic properties of matter and classification, properties of matter, properties of atomic structure and periodic system, interactions between chemical species and molecular structures, and make connections between these topics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To be able to comprehend the properties and classification of the material
2   2. To understand the importance of measurement in chemistry and to develop the ability to measure
3   3. To be able to understand the nature of energy, energy types, changes, thermochemical equations and thermodynamic laws
4   4. To be able to explain atom structure and atom models
5   5. To be able to comprehend the properties of the periodic system
6   6. To be able to explain interactions between chemical species and bonding theories.
7   7. Drawing of Lewis structures of compounds, molecular geometries according to VSEPR
8   8. Comparing the general properties of solids, liquids and gases

Course Contents

1 Properties and classification of the material
2 Nomenclature of compounds
3 Measurement in chemistry and units: SI units, significant figures
4 Basic laws and moles concept: Law of mass conservation, law of constant proportions, concept of mole and Avogadro number
5 Thermochemistry: Energy, heat and enthalpy, chemical change enthalpies and reaction temperatures
6 Atomic electron structure: properties of radiation, quantum and photons, electron and proton discovery, electron orbitals and electron distributions, atomic spectra and energy levels, wave characteristics of electrons
7 Historical development of atomic models (Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, Modern atomic theories)
8 General Review, Course Evaluation, Midterm Exam
9 Periodic table and atomic properties: Periodic table and classification of elements, atom and ion radius, ionization energy, electronegativity and electron affinity
10 Interactions between chemical species and bonding theories I: Ionic, Covalent and Metallic bonds, Lewis formulas, lewis structures of ionic and covalent compounds
11 Interactions between chemical species and bonding theories II: VSEPR theory, valence bond orbital theory, molecular orbital theory
12 Gases: general properties of gases, ideal gas, gas laws (Boyle-Mariotte, Charles, Avagadro), ideal gas law, partial pressure, kinetic theory, real gases and gas mixtures
13 Liquids: characteristics of liquids (surface tension, viscosity), evaporation of liquids, phase diagrams, liquid vapor pressure, boiling point
14 Solids: Properties of solids, crystal structures and ionic crystals
15 Final exam
