Course Objective

To teach other disciplines as ecology subdivisions and the related basic concepts, ecological cycles, the relationship between population and kommunite are, biosphere, energy flow, nutrient cycles, biodiversity, flora and fauna in Turkey, endemic animal and plant species in Turkey; endangered species, endangered species, and biological control.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to learn subdivisions of ecology and related disciplines, and basic concepts.
2   To be able to learn ecological cycles, biosphere, energy flow, population and interrelationships between communities.
3   To be able to learn flora and fauna in Turkey, endemic animal and plant species in Turkey.
4   To be able to learn biological control with endangered species and ecology.

1 Definitions, subdivisions of ecology and other related disciplines
2 Basic concepts in ecology
3 Species, population, communities ecosystem, habitat and ecological niche; ecological cycles; population ecology, interactions between communities
4 Biosphere and its properties
5 Environmental factors: water, light, temperature, humidity, pressure and edaphic factors
6 Terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems and their features
7 Energy flow in ecosystems, food chain, food web, energy pyramid and thermodynamic laws
8 General Review, Course Evaluation, Midterm Exam
9 Substance Cycles / Ecological Cycles
10 Ecosphere, eutrophication, bio-amplification, sucession, biodiversity and adaptation
11 The situation in Turkey, flora and fauna
12 Endemic animal and plant species in Turkey
13 Endangered species
14 Endangered species; biological control; misconceptions about these subjects
15 Final Exam

Course topics according to learning outcomes will be assessed via midterm, homeworks, and final exams.

Attendence rule is 70% for the lectures and 80% for the laboratory section.
Attemps to cheat may result in disciplinary actions.
The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes may be added to midterm and final grades. Students will be informed at the beginning of the semester.
