Course Objective

To understand the definitions of genetics and biotechnology, their fields, importance, effects on our lives and history. To understand Mendel s postulates and their use in genetics. To understand basics principles of molecular biology. To learn the area of use of genetics and molecular biology in biotechnology. To follow and interpret the developments in biotechnology. To understand the basic mechanisms of evolution and explain biological concepts with these mechanisms. To To carry out basic molecular biology and genetics experiments in the laboratory environment

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Analyze the structure and functions of nucleic acids
2   Describe DNA replication and recombinant DNA properties
3   Understand and describe the processes of RNA and protein synthesis, design basic experiments related to these subjects
4   Describe the effect of DNA mutations on living organisms
5   Show how Mendel came to the conclusions of independent assortment and segregation, apply the laws of inheritence to related problems
6   Explain he concepts of character, gene, locus, mutation, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, homozygous and heterozygous
7   Explain the daily use of microbial, plant, animal, environmental and medical biotechnology
8   Understand the basic steps of recombinant DNA technology
9   Interpret genetic engineering and modern biotechnology methods and their consequences
10   Interpret genetic engineering and modern biotechnology methods and their consequences
11   Explain the generation of life and diversity of living organisms in terms of evolutionary mechanisms
