Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the importance of the laboratory in science education; emphasis on the place of laboratory work in the Science Program; providing information on the security measures to be implemented and taken in the laboratory; The introduction of experimental equipment used in science education, the demonstration of its possibilities for its use according to safety rules and guidelines; planning and conducting various experiments based on different laboratory approaches appropriate to the nature of physics, chemistry, biology, environment, location science topics covered in the curriculum of the 5th and 6th grade science courses of the secondary school, giving examples about the place and use of technology in the laboratory, implementation and reporting; developing skills to experiment with simple and inexpensive materials; to include the activities that will reveal the importance of scientific process skills in experiments; to demonstrate alternative approaches to assess student performance in experiments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will understand the importance of the Laboratory in Science Education and explain their goals.
2   Students explain the exact location of their laboratory work.
3   Students explain contemporary teaching approaches used in experiments and in the laboratory.
4   Students explain the necessary safety precautions in the construction of experiments.
5   Students use simple materials to design experiments suitable for the achievements in the Science Program.
6   The students explain the concepts that are included in the science curriculum with experiments.
7   The students evaluate the activities in the Science Program.
8   Students will explain the approaches of the Experiment and Laboratory evaluation.
9   Students express experimental and scientific process skills.
10   Students realize the importance of technological tools and equipment in Experiments and Laboratories.

Course Contents

1 The importance and purpose of the laboratory in science education is explained.
2 The rules to be followed in the laboratory are explained and the safety precautions are emphasized.
3 Experimental materials and tools are introduced; experiments are prepared according to safety rules.
4 In the lab, the location of computers and the use of technology is emphasized.
5 Experimental and laboratory approaches are explained; information about the planning and implementation of the experimental period is given.
6 Experimental and scientific process skills are explained.
7 In experimental studies; information about measurement and evaluation is given.
8 Course overview, evaluation, and midterm exam
9 Using simple and cheap materials
10 Using simple and cheap materials, designing experiments in accordance with the fifth grade Science and Technology course outcomes in the secondary school.

The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the mid-term scores. The exam dates will be indicated in the lesson plan. As the exam dates become definite, the previously announced dates may change.

Assessment Criteria

The skills and knowledge related to the experiments, activities and applications in the scope of Turkish National Education will be assessed by students' presentation assignments, portfolios, experimental applications and projects

1. It is required to attend at least 70% of the classes.
2. Misbehaviors in the exams may result in disciplinary charges.
3. There may be quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
