Course Objective

This course aims to supply the students with the skills of identifying and analyzing music forms, and the structural components of musical pieces at various scales.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Can define the concept of variation.
2   Can list the elements of a theme that can be varied.
3   Can classify variation forms.
4   Can discover the variation processesand the elements shaping the variations in a piece.
5   Can explain two different form analyses in fugue.
6   Can discover a fugue's theme and its variations.

1 The concept of variation in music and its definitions.
2 Elements of a theme that can be varied.
3 Classification and comparison of variation forms.
4 Variation processes, elements/methods for shaping variations, ways of finalizing a piece in variation form.

6 Examples of continuous variations.

8 Examples of sectional variations.

11 Definition of fugue; its difference from other musical forms.
12 Two different constitutions of a fugue: its cathegory regarding standard forms, and its plan of expositions and episodes.
13 The plan of the first exposition of the fugue: concepts of subject, answer, free counterpoint and counter-subject.
14 Midterm exam

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Each topic is explained and interpreted following the textbook reference, supported when necessary using staved board, piano, audio excerpts from the repertoire. The students directed via questions to discussion of the topic and the examples.
