Course Objective

To give students necessary knowledge to understand chord structures, cadences, chord connections and their functions within musical phrases with the purpose of achieving conscious and rational performance.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Build triads in major and minor keys.
2   Arrange triads in variety of keys in SATB (four-part) setting.
3   Connect triads in root position.
4   Harmonize the bass for SATB in various tonalities with root position chords.
5   Harmonize the soprano.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition and objectives of harmony. Comparison of the concepts of harmony, counterpoint, homophony and polyphony.
2 Chords, types of chords, arranging triads in four-part setting, vocal ranges (SATB).
3 Four-part chord constructions in various arrangements. Exercises.
4 Exercises (continued)
5 Principles of chord connection. Explanation of the rules, study of examples. Exercises.
6 Various chord connections in numerous keys.
7 Motions in harmony: Similar, Oblique and Contrary motions. Stepwise motion of the bass. Exercises.
8 Harmonization of the given bass with root position chords. Exercises by Prof. Sayram Akdil: No 1 and No 2

Lectures
In-class lectures are carried out through the harmonic examples written on the music staff board by the instructor and through varied and individual realizations of students.

Homework Assignments
Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

EXAMS: A midterm exam will be held at the end of the semester; a student will earn 60% of his/her grade through this exam. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.

Assessment Criteria

Written exam and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
