Course Objective

This course aims to build a structure about melody and rhythmic, genres,instruments and concepts on Turkish folk music.

1   Auditorily distinguish rhythmic features of folk music
2   Define and classify rhythmic features of Turkish Folk music
3   Identify instruments of Turkish Folk music and recognize them visual and auditory
4   Explain concepts of melodic structure in folk music

2 Rhythmic structure in the Turkish Folk Music, long air and broken air (lit. Uzun hava and kırık hava)
3 Aerophones and idiophones in the Turkish Folk Music
4 Chordophones in the Turkish Folk Music
5 Relation of genres and music in the folk literature
6 Long air genres such as bozlak, ağıt, maya
7 Long air genres such as yüksek hava, hoyrat, gurbet havası
8 Broken air genres such as zeybeks and dance airs
9 Scale: definitions and types
10 Scale examples and chords on the baglama
11 Local and regional terminology in the Turkish Folk Music
12 Playing technics on the balgama such as şelpe
13 Ministrelsy tradition
14 Mid-term exam

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Instructor will explain the basic concepts of Turkish Folk music and argue them with students. Features of genres, instruments and performance will be emphasized through visual and audio recordings.

Assessment Criteria

Exams:
It targerts to measure whether students have achieved the knowledge based competences defined in learning outcomes.
Assignment/presentation:
It depends on the quality of analysis of the data collected by student at the beginning of the semester with the literature determination, observations and interviews on the subject of assignment given by the tutorial or selected by her/his choice. The student is expected to reflect the characteristics of assignment topics conveyed by tutorial within the course in her/his assignment. The oral presentation of the project assignment, which the student will deliver in writing at the end of the semester, is evaluated in terms of the subject being clearly understood, the quality of written narrative principles such as format and spelling rules.
Attendance in the course:
The score to be obtained from the student s attendance depend on a) attendance status of the course, b) the quality of the students answers to the questions asked by the instructor during the course, c) the quality of the technical, formal and oral narration in the presentation and (d) the contrubition of the student to the creation of the positive learning environment.

1. %70 of attendance is obligatory.
2. Every kind of plagiarism will be ended with disciplinary punishment.
3. Not attending the class will not be counted as a valid excuse for delivering the term paper after deadline.
4. Assignments delivered after deadline will not be accepted
