Course Objective

The objective of the course is built on main concepts students should know, and terminological information that forms the play and about the play structure (like theme, subtheme, personification, plot structure, action, conflict, circumstance, climax, rising action, motif, sybol, crysis etc.). Moreover dramaturgy, dramaturgist and his/her fields of study are underlined, focused.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What is dramaturgy = the play Kunstwissenschaft (art-science) What are the duties of a dramaturg What s the place of the dramaturg in Turkish Theater With the information given, students meet the concept of dramaturgy
2 What are the characteristics of a play What is (introduction body conclusion) A play depending on chain of events with a linear structure is introduced. With the explanation of the example of Necati Cumalı s short play Vur Emri that takes place in Urla, Izmir, Turkey, application will be done.
3 Action and action trend that are the sub-concepts of the chain of events, are brought into focus. Inner and outer action, action formed by the characters and the action develops through the line structure are all mentioned. A play of Shakespeare will be read and the construction of the action development will be held.
4 The following will be held with the examples: theme concept, which is the thought ruling throughout the play, and the dramatic events that are vital to introduce it, the event that starts the action. Discussion is to be made about what are the sub-themes. Examples of dramatic event from different plays are given, and when the most important points forming the plot are explained, those with the dramatic qualities are detected.
5 The situation and the conflict are enrolled; discussed through examples. Static moments, situations that a play is structured, photographic moments of a play, are determined. Curiosity source, the conflict, moments that makes ask what s next are detected.
6 Solution and final examples are held. Flash back. Examples from the plays with an open ending, or the judgements is left to the audience are given. Those plays are discussed ones with linear structure, ones let the audience decide the end, ones telling the final from the beginning, ones make audience decide about the final.
7 The importance of the motive in the plays, and usage of symbols known concepts are put emphasis on. The motive is also way to catch a poetic air. So that, examples useful are given from F.Garcia Lorca or Chekhov
8 The concept of place is held. Author s descriptions of atmosphere and place given in the beginning of the play are discussed. Chamber, outdoor, unidentified place, the place with a sense of fantasy; the decor/place and designer relation; the contribution of the place to a play is discussed.
9 The emphasis is on concept of time. Planning the time, linear concept of time, narration of different times, usage of movements in time, and the time and place undefined are all exemplified through plays. Example of situation plays, in which the time is stopped and static moment is handled, are given.
10 The interlocution plan (dialog structure ) is held. Examples plays are given, that contain dalogues of serious and humorous ingredient. Contemporary theatre s state which is a mixture of those two is exemplified. Example: a Sam Bobrick play.
11 Characterisation is held. Stereo types, characters are discussed through examples. Examples are given to stereo types from folk theater and deep characters as well.
12 Examples of complete character and atmosphere plays are held. Rare examples of a stable character and atmospheres without the conflict are studied.
13 Evaluation is applied on a whole text.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Especially the genres and movements placed within the art of drama, and the information about the form of a stage play are all thought. Then dramatugy which is a mastery of playing a game with a play, comes. And on the example plays, first theorethical (photographic) dramaturgy and then applied (cinematographic) dramaturgy and their functions are all held.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

For the methods of evaluation, all steges are important: first information on concepts and then information of the text. So reading example plays and then apply the dramaturgy concepts thought is the way to follow which is inductive from concepts or pieces to the whole. For the assesment attendance, participation, discussion, active search of the concepts and attempt to apply them into the plays, opening discussions over the papers, attempt to comment on the plays, will be all evaluated as the criteria for conviction.

Assessment Criteria

As well as the midterm and final exams, it is also important how a student follows and participates within the semester. In the first grade, in a period with a high level of learning and comprehension, student must be careful about gaining a complete word set of dramam terms and notions in order not to have problems about theatral concepts. Afterwards they all should be applied to the stage play texts that are being read. Criteria, is bound to measuring the curiosity and interests that are augmented with leading the students mostly to researches.

Attendance is obliged. Students are also expected to participate in the classes. Moreover students are expected to read the play of the week in advance and participate evaluating the text within the context covered.
