Course Objective

Learning to critically review articles in the dental literature, find high-quality evidence-based research in dental practice, and put this evidence into practice.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines evidence-based dentistry.
2   Classifies the articles in the dental literature according to the evidence hierarchy.
3   Knows how to reach articles with high quality of evidence on diagnosis and treatment options in the literature.
4   Knows how to filter in Pub Med and reaches articles with high evidence quality.
5   Knows how to integrate high-quality evidence research findings into clinical cases

Course Contents

1 Evidence-Based Dentistry and Introduction to Evidence-Based Dentistry Critical evaluation of studies consisting of questions including diagnostic test accuracy
2 Ethical principles in evidence-based practice, including joint decision making Assignment presentation and discussion
3 Misleading and taking sides in scientific research Assignment presentation and discussion
4 Evidence-based study steps Assignment presentation and discussion
5 Generating questions in PICO format in evidence-based dentistry
6 Name of different digital information search systems, level of evidence; search digital databases based on the generated PICO question
7 Hierarchy of evidence and ranking of good evidence for articles in the dental literature
8 Importance of randomized controlled trials
9 Articles in the dental literature and application of evidence
10 Critical evaluation of studies involving questions concerning prognosis

The lesson will be presented in class. Lecture notes will be given to students. Students will follow the lesson from their lecture notes and textbooks.

5. The student should know how to integrate high-quality evidence research findings into the clinical case.
