Course Objective

To explain periodontal surgical treatment indications, treatment methods, suture techniques and materials, wound healing and diagnosis and treatment of furcation lesions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines the treatment protocols of periodontal diseases.
2   Defines general and special indications of periodontal surgery.
3   Comprehends the treatment approaches in the presence of intrabony defects.
4   Understands mucogingival surgical principles and intruments which mucogingival surgery should be performed in which clinical situation.

Course Contents

1 Periodontal examination, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan, patient examination, diagnosis of periodontal lesions, periodontal treatment prognosis, periodontal treatment plan Flap operation indications, contraindications, general information about the methods
2 Classification of periodontal pockets Flap techniques, wound healing after flap operation, post-operative care
3 Periodontal treatment methods Suture materials, techniques applied in periodontology
4 Professional oral hygiene instruction and patient motivation Primary wound healing, repair and regeneration
5 Mechanical and chemical plaque control Secondary wound healing, repair and regeneration
6 Scalling and root planning Furcation anatomy and classification of lesions
7 Evaluation of non-surgical periodontal treatment outcomes Treatment of furcation lesions
8 Traumatic Occlusal Forces, occlusion and treatment, periodontal splints for mobile teeth Classification of periodontal pockets
9 Definition of the relationship between implantology and periodontology and similarities and differences between the peri-implant and periodontal tissues Treatment methods of intrabony defects
10 The relationship between periodontology-endodontie-prosthodontie and orthodontie Regenerative therapy in intrabony defects

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The lesson will be presented in class. Lecture notes will be given to students. Students will follow the lesson from their lecture notes and textbooks.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to describe the treatment protocols of periodontal diseases.
2. The student should be able to define general and specific indications of periodontal surgery.
3. The student should be able to explain the treatment approaches in the presence of intrabony defects.
4. The student should be able to define the mucogingival surgical applications and the patients in which mucogingival surgery should be performed in which clinical situation.
