General Description

History

The International Relations masters program aims to equip students with advanced level of theoretical and practical knowledge, (oral, written and research) skills and competency on international relations, as well as on the subfields of International Relations and/or regional studies, and aims to develop analytical and critical thinking skills of the students. The language of the program is English.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

1,5 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 90 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Program aims at providing those who aim at improving themselves in international relations field with required knowledge and enabling them to comment on and improve their knowledge and gain specialization. In order to realise this goal the candidates are aimed at being educated with an interdisciplinary approach, supported by varied field studies, given analytical skills to decipher comtemporary issues.
Currently, the International Relations Department has 23 full-time academic personnel, including 2 professors, 3 associate and 5 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 10 research assistants. In the past few years, members of the Department have been awarded a series of research fellowships such as Turkish Higher Educational Council, Jean Monnet and the British Academy. There are library, computer lab and wireless internet to support the students.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Acquire advanced knowledge in the International Relations discipline.
2   Evaluate critically the acquired knowledge on basic concepts, theories and applications.
3   Define and analyze conflicts which require specialization, offer a resolution by referring to related theoretical approaches, reach a conclusion and report it both verbally and in writing.
4   Achieve self-discipline and take responsibility for their actions and decisions.
5   Work effectively in groups.
6   Develop skills of critical analysis in relation to the political, socio-cultural, economic and legal developments in national and international agenda.
7   Communicate competently and clearly with colleagues by speaking, reading and writing English at Common European Framework of Reference Level B 1.
8   Convey their ideas and thoughts effectively and clearly to the experts and non-experts, verbally and in writing, by using related language and terminology in their field.
9   Develop competence on information technology (including computer skills) required by its field.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates have various job opportunities both in the public and private sectors. There are graduates in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU specialists, foreign trade specialists in various public institutions and civil society organizations and academicians in various universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to the related employment positions in their area of specialization.

Those courses International Organizations, European Integration, The European Union Law, Turkish Political Structure, Middle East Politics, International Law of Human Rights, International Environmental Law, Turkey-EU Relations, Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict, International Security Problems, Comparative Politics: Main Concepts, US Foreign Policy, International Law, Law of the Sea, Theories and Practices of Conflict Resolution, Selected Issues in EU Law and Graduation Project. c. Other Features of the Program; ca. Elective courses inside/outside the department: There are no elective courses offered outside the department. Elective courses are 3 hours in a week, and continue for one semester. All elective courses are 7 ECTS. cb. Prerequisites Graduate students from faculties providing 4 years education and military schools can apply to this programme.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Non-Thesis Program is comprised of courses (at least 75 ECTS), Term Project (15 ECTS), in total 90 ECTS credits.Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
