DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: COASTAL ENGINEERING

General Description

History

Coastal Engineering Ph.D. Program was established in 1975 when the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology was founded. The program is one of the few Ph.D. programs offered by the universities in Turkey. The program focusses on studies on hydrodynamics of coastal and marine areas, design and implementation of coastal and marine structures, sediment transport and morphology of coastal and marine areas, natural disasters and climate change, marine renewable energy sources, integrated coastal-sea-basin management and spatial analysis techniques.

Qualification Awarded

Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering

Level of Qualification

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum 80/100 or 3/4 Cumulative Grade Point Average, minimum score of 60 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 70 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 55 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students graduated from the Coastal Engineering program may pursue careers within the private sector in companies that work on coastal and marine structures (construction, surveys, planning and implementation), renewable energy, coastal and marine monitoring, modelling and environmental impact assessment. Students may also find employment within governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and within coastal municipalities. Further career opportunities can be found in academia, within departments, programs and institutes which are concerned with coastal and marine research and education.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to post doctorate programmes.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5151 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.
