General Description

History

Department of Neuroscience was established at 2004 as a multidisciplinary department of Institute of Health Science by approval of The Council of Higher Education. Our academic personel are from basic (Biochemistry, Physiology, Anotomy, Pathology and Pharmacology) and clinical (Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery) departments. Basic Neuroscience Msc programme started education at 2005. Program duration is 2 years (1 year is course, 1
Year is thesis study) . Program language is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor s Degree; having obtained at least 55 from relevant branch of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or from exams equivalence of which are accepted; in case of graduate of Faculty of Medicine having obtained at least 50 from Medical Specialty Exam (TUS); having obtained at least 50 from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from other foreign language exams equivalence of which are accepted or at least 55 from the exam held by DEU Foreign Languages Institute. Transcript; having obtained at least 65 from the Post Graduate Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. İn total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Basic Neuroscience Msc programme started education at 2005.The objectives of this programme are obtaining knowledge about basic neuroscience terminology and basic theories, improving presentation skills, developing ability to follow, interpret and present domain-specific scientific research, acquiring knowledge and skills on basic research methods in neuroscience. Program contains 1 Compulsory Course each semester and elective courses in different neurosience fields. Students may take courses from different programs and university.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Defining the basic concepts of neuroscience, such as neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, understanding and explaining the organization and normal functions of nervous system.
2   Learning theoretical information on psychiatric and neurological diseases and their ethiopathogenesis, genetic and neurochemical components an having pathological information related to neurocognitive impairment in such diseases.
3   Having fundamental theoretical information about glial cell biology.
4   Having the basic knowledge of the methods used in diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
5   Having knowledge of cell culture and laboratory animal research methods as basic research technique and being able to use one of those techique.
6   Being able to use molecular biology and genetic techniques.
7   Being able to scan the literature on basic neuroscience, conduct a research project, record and analyze data and transform data to a research article.
8   Being aware of ethical issues in conducted researches.
9   Being proficient and able to present information in neuroscience in oral or written way.
10   Having the ability of work as a group and cooperation.

Assessment of students was done with 2 midterm examination, 1 final examination, homework and project studies. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
