General Description

History

In 1973, the idea of Marine Research in the Aegean University, "Multidisciplinary Research Program for Regional Development" started in the framework of the ship and marine laboratory equipment required for data collection efforts has been the establishment in question. The Institute was established depending on the University of the Aegean on 14/10/1975, and connected to the Dokuz Eylul University in 1982.
The purpose of the establishment and the activity range was determined as follows:
* Marine Geology and Geophysics seabed with the possibility of economic mineral deposits and petroleum research and technology
* Marine discharges and technology in terms of marine chemistry and environmental engineering
* Physical oceanography and marine mechanics, wave mechanics
* Coastal and coastal structures engineering and technology
* Marine mapping and bathymetry
* Marine equipment technology
* Marine technology and economics of the legal issues related to it
* Marine structures and technology

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 65 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Maritime institutions and organizations that are active in our region, the expertise they need to-date marine technologies, these requirements are increasing day by day, but answering the shortcomings that have the potential dimensions. Yet, DEU Institute of Marine Science and Technology, established since 1975 our country has acquired the seas and international waters, has a technological background. Necessity of presenting this knowledge for the benefit of the maritime industry on the basis of shipbuilding carried out research activities in this program.
Research activities at the beginning of the expected benefits, open new research horizons for particularly including small boating sector and construction and maintenance of the entire ship - repair industry in line with current needs by transferring all of the accumulated experience of the university under the coordination of the ship program.
The program has experience with all the equipment, numerous high quality academic and technical staff, laboratories and workshops, shows efficacy in land and sea vehicles for touring boats, many of the ship from the container ships with the size of fishing vessels until the size of a large oil tanker need for many of the ship basin, including the main machinery.

7	To adopt an ethical approach for design and engineering solutions with being aware of people-space relations, social and environmental responsibilities.
8	To tarck the ship engineering information by using a foreign language and communicate with colleagues verbally and in wiritng.
9	To use the information and communication technologies in an advance level along with the required level of design softwares.
10	To have awareness in ethical and juridical results of technological practices.
11	To have the ability to do original works by existing hardware, softeare and computing technologies.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5151 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor. NAV 5037, NAV 5043, NAV 5030 and NAV 5031 courses are obligatory for students who are not graduates of Naval Architecture.

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
