DEGREE PROGRAMMES

History

Department of Physics started offering undergraduate program in 1998. Non-formal education program which was provided between 2008 and 2012 years, was ended by 2012. As of 2022, the education program constitutes only formal education program which language of instruction is partly English (%30). Beside the undergraduate program, the department also provides graduate level education and started offering Master of Science in 1998 and Doctor of Philosophy in 2003 in Physics within the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Program language of instruction is partly English (%30).
Education is total 4 years (excluding 1 year of prep class) with 2 semesters every year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
Grading is done on a 4 point system.
To graduate from this 4 year program (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), students are required to successfully complete all courses and satisfy a minimum of 240 ECTS credits. The students also need to complete the graduation project and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of a minimum of 2.00 / 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The Physics undergraduate program aims to train well-educated physicists for the technical and professional fields in industry and research institutions. The objectives of the Physics Bachelors Program are:
To educate students to become professionals with in-depth knowledge and skills in science and mathematics to understand physical systems,
To enable students to analyze, design and solve problems in physics and related disciplines,
To enable students to develop the skills needed to give presentations, to communicate both in writing and verbally, to deal with scientific sources of information, and to work independently as well as with others,
To provide the foundation for an advanced degree program and lifelong learning.
Through these objectives, after the construction of classical physics background in first three semester, beginning from the fourth semester, the lectures on the subject of modern physics are taken by students. Some of the last four semesters courses are quantum mechanics, solid state physics, electromagnetic theory, atom and molecular physics. Beginning from the third semester, the students will take an opportunity to study and to get knowledge on many different areas of physics with selecting the elective courses. Some of these elective courses are special relativity, renewable energy sources, optoelectronics, superconductivity, molecular modelling and elementary particle physics. These courses are supported with modern educational materials.
There are Mechanics, Electricity-Magnetism, Vibration and Waves, Modern Physics, Electronics and Computer Teaching Laboratories and X-Ray Crystallography, Superconductivity, Environmental Radioactivity and Electron Spin Resonance Research Laboratories in Department of Physics. Education-teaching and research activities as of 2022, The educational and research activities are conducted with an academic staff consisting of 7 professors, 11 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 2 specialists and 3 research assistants.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Physics graduates can work as a researcher in universities, research and development laboratories of industrial companies and modern analysis and quality control laboratories. In addition to these, graduates can work in the fields of medical physics, logistics and software. Furthermore, they can be employed as a physics teacher at private or state schools after having a Pedagogical Formation Certificate.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The relevant articles of Education and Examination Regulation of Dokuz Eylül University and Education and Examination Implementation Principles of the Faculty of Science are applicable for exams and course success grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Students have to take and succeed at least 2 ECTS Faculty Elective Course Pool or at least 2 ECTS University Elective Course Pool in the 3rd Semester.
Students have to take and succeed at least 2 ECTS Faculty Elective Course Pool or at least 2 ECTS University Elective Course Pool in the 4th Semester.
Students have to take and succeed at least 2 ECTS Faculty Elective Course Pool or at least 2 ECTS University Elective Course Pool in the 5th Semester.
Students have to take and succeed at least 4 ECTS Faculty Elective Course Pool or at least 4 ECTS University Elective Course Pool in the 6th Semester.
3rd grade students are required to take 7 ECTS in the 5th Semester and 7 ECTS in the 6th Semester, totally 14 ECTS, of Departmental Elective Courses.
4th grade students are required to take 7 ECTS in the 7th Semester and 7 ECTS in the 8th Semester, totally 14 ECTS, of Departmental Elective Courses.
The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed the Graduation Project and all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.
