Course Objective

Audience of the course is undergraduate student in the 7th semester. An introduction to fundamentals of magnetism and its applications is aimed. The students will be able to gain understanding of magnetic materials and magnetic structures which serve as basics for future research ability in a basic level.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to understand the sources of magnetic field, Maxwell equations, magnetic moment, and concept of spin and to see the relationship between these phenomena.
2   Become familiar with the concepts of paramagnetism, ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism and diamagnetism.
3   To gain the theoretical fundamentals of the magnetic order and symmetry breaking.
4   To gain information on the materials exhibiting magnetic character such as insulators, semiconductors, semimetals and metals.
5   Modelling with atomistic Hamiltonians and lattice models.
