General Description

History

Act No. 6225 to amend some Acts and Decree having force of Law issued on 06.04.2011 and the profession of Speech and Language Therapy gained legal status. Due to this status and the increasing need for speech and language therapists, necessary initiatives were taken and at the Higher Education Executive Board meeting dated 17/01/2018, it was deemed appropriate to open the Language and Speech Therapy Department within the Faculty of Health Sciences of Dokuz Eylül University.

Qualification Awarded

Language and Speech Therapy master's graduates graduate with the title of "master of science". In this context, well-equipped scientist are trained in the evaluation of speech and language disorders and the application of therapy techniques.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same discipline. At least 55 points on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. At least 50 points on Language Proficiency Tests ((ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or at least 50 points from other foreign language exams whose equivalence has been accepted by ÖSYM, or at least 55 from the exam given by DEU School of Foreign Languages. Transcript. At least 65 points from the Master's Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
For students who want to transfer from higher education institutions in Turkey and abroad to Dokuz Eylül University, the Regulation on the Principles of Transfer between Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfers and the Evaluation Conditions related to horizontal transfers determined by our University Senate are applied. Horizontal Transfer Quotas are announced by the Council of Higher Education. The evaluation is made by the commissions formed in faculties and colleges and announced after being decided by the relevant boards.

The Graduate Transfers:
The provisions of the "Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Education Associate Degree Programs" are applied for vertical transfers of graduates from Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs that are a continuation of the fields they have completed.
The universities inform YÖK regarding the quotas and YÖK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YÖK due to the results of graduate transfer exam.

According to Dokuz Eylül University Postgraduate Education Regulations, students are not admitted to the programs affiliated to the Institutes with lateral transfer. The student's application showing the course contents and the transcript, the recommendation of the advisor, the opinion of the department chair and the institute management, based on the petition regarding which of the courses that the student took while enrolled in the graduate program of another university and was successful after enrolling in the same graduate program in Dokuz Eylül, regarding which ones should be counted from the minimum course load. determined by the decision of the board. 2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Language and Speech Therapy undergraduate education will be given for 4 years full time and the language of instruction of the department will be Turkish. For 4 years, both theoretical and practical courses will be conducted by expert faculty members. The content of the training in the theoretical and practical courses will be aimed at different fields such as Biomedical Sciences, Linguistics, Behavioral Sciences, Language and Speech Therapy, Research Sciences and Public Health. Apart from the courses related to these fields, our students will be directed to various studies to improve their field knowledge and these studies will be in the form of seminars, reports and research projects. In order to train a good speech and language therapist, it is very important to observe the therapies in person in order to see the practical applications of this profession and to recognize different applications in different disorders. In this respect, the students of the department will be provided with the opportunity to observe enough language and speech therapy practices. Apart from these studies, our students will have institutional internship responsibilities to increase their experience in the field.

5   To guide the patients and patients with language and speech disorders correctly, to provide counseling to families and to let families attend and participate in therapies.
6   To have different field knowledge in order to work in cooperation with experts from different disciplines in the field of language and speech disorders.
7   Have the ability to follow, analyze and apply new scientific studies, practices in the field of language and speech therapy.
8   To follow professional and scientific ethical norms in working life, communication with patients and scientific studies
9   To be able to do scientific research and prepare articles.
10   To participate in the development and recognition of the language and speech therapy science and in the promotion of social awareness of the field.
11   To have foreign language knowledge to pursue scientific research in international level in the field of language and speech therapy.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Our students who successfully complete the 4-year process will graduate with the title of Language and Speech Therapist. Students who graduate as Language and Speech Therapists will have job opportunities in both health and educational institutions (Hospitals, Health Centers, Rehabilitation Centers, Official or Private Education Centers, etc., Ministry of National Education Guidance Counseling Services Centers etc., their own centers/clinics).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In the lessons, the student's evaluation is made with the success of 2 midterm exams, 1 final exam, homework and projects. In order to be successful in the course, it is necessary to get at least 75.

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete 120 ECTS credits to graduate and must successfully complete the courses corresponding to 60 ECTS. In order to be successful in each course, a minimum grade point average of 2.50 /4.00 must be obtained. In addition, the thesis project must be completed and presented in front of the jury and the thesis must be accepted by the jury. It is necessary to take courses for 54 ECTS, to take 2 ECTS seminars and 4 ECTS for specialization, and to complete 60 ECTS equivalent thesis work. Students must complete 120 ECTS credits in total.
