General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University Institute for Social Science Department of History was founded in 1998. There are 11 Professors, 5 Lecturers and 4 Research Assistants in the Department of History. Masters Degree Program with Thesis In History is still active as an interdisciplinary program in the Department of History. The Program is designed to focus on History in order to educate Masters in History on the basis of scientific and historiographical methodologies. The mode of education is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the program is to grow up historians who are expected to follow events and developments in Türkiye and all over the World closely and to know historical background of happenings, to engage and build upon the work of their colleagues and predecessors and they are expected to be "original" at the same time, to be a keen observer on national and global events, to internalize critical approach to objective knowledge, to have the ability to evaluate historical sources rightly and to deal with major novelties in the world historiography.

3   Ability to analyze and evaluate properly progresses and stages of West and East from antiquity to present according to comparative methodology
4   Ability to know and to analyze political, social, economic and cultural aspects of history of Turkey and World History
5   Ability to know all historical steps and points of transformation and modernization in a given society
6   Acquisition of skills required to know Ottoman paleography to read archive documents and periodical literature of time
7   Acquisition of skills required to prepare a proper text on basis of academic learning norms and scientific writting style and to be confident to deliver a lecture
8   Ability to make comparative historical analysis and assessment on fields of individual, social, urbanistic and similar structures

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related master's degree enables the holder to exercise the profession. They may specifically apply to academic and scientific associations such as Turkish Historical Association as a researcher or master in a field; public and private universities as research assistant and lecturer or master in a field; state and private schools as teachers; and, press and mass-media companies.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 53 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
