DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Geophysical Engineering

General Description

History

The department of Geophysics was first founded in 1974 attached to the Faculty of Sciences of Ege University at the Bornova Campus. Undergraduate education was also commenced in the fall semester of the academic year of 1974-1975. After Dokuz Eylül University was founded in 1982 by the Higher Education Council (YOK), the department was transferred to the Engineering Faculty of this university. Undergraduate education has been carried out in the Department of Geophysical Engineering since then 1982. The department has moved to the Buca Campus in 1999 having the sub departments of Applied Geophysics, Earth Physics and Seismology under its umbrella, and as well as its only institution has been carrying out the activities in this field at the Aegean Region.

Main educational purposes of the Department of Geophysics are graduating students who are; the objectives of first cycle (Bachelors Degree) programme in Geophysical Engineering are to train individuals who shall be accomplished with the required knowledge of capability of utilizing the basic and engineering sciences theoretically and applicably, obtaining skills in the subjects of analysis and interpretation with respect to Geophysical Engineering and continuously improving oneself, accomplished with respect to research and technologic developments, carrying out and able to manage multi-disciplinary team works, able to correlate to solve the social problems with ethical professional responsibility, conscious towards the preservation of cultural heritage and knowledgeable about the contemporary environmental issues, conscious and knowledgeable about the issues of earthquakes and other natural hazards affecting the community socially and economically, and accomplished with the required knowledge to be able to search for natural resources.
For these purposes and solving all the surface and underground problems such as water investigations, ground investigations, earthquake, dam constructions; the lectures of introduction of geophysical engineering, applied geophysics, general geology, resistance, potential theory and applications, mapping techniques, introduction to statistics, numerical analyses and computing, data analysis, geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, computer programming, electrical prospection, gravity and magnetic prospection, special topics in geophysics, seismology, seismotectonics-engineering seismology, drilling techniques, soil mechanics, well logging, earth physics, occupational laws and their applications and engineering ethics are presented. Successful students are allowed to make double major and minor program. Departments education curriculum has been accredited by MUDEK society (Turkish Engineering Education Accreditation Establishment) since 2007. Our department has also EUR-ACE logo on its diplomas since 2009. One of the main objectives of our department is to prepare our students more effectively as an engineer. Consequently our department make agreements in ERASMUS education. The Geophysical Engineering Department have been giving service to public local, regional, national and international administrations, industry and other private sector. In order to sustain its educational and research activities in the Department has Earth Physics 1-2, Applied Geophysics 1-2, Seismology 1-2, Tümer Alpaslan Seismic Data Processing and Field Equipment laboratories.
