Course Objective

To analyse the geodynamic structure of the earth

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the concept of geodynamics and understand its importance in terms of geosciences 2   To be able to comprehend the structural and geodynamic properties of the earth 3   To be able to analyse the stress-deformation relationship in the earth 4   To be able to comprehend the physical and chemical properties of the earth 5   To be able to synthesise earth mechanisms showing continuity on short and long time scales

Week Subject Description 1 Definition and importance of geodynamics 2 Earth and its layers 3 Structural and Geodynamic Properties of the Earth's layers 4 Plate Tectonics 5 Investigation of Dynamic Structures at Plate Boundaries 6 Faulting, Formation and classification of earthquakes 7 What is deformation 8 Stress-Strain and Deformation of Lithosphere 9 Elasticity and Flexure, Elastic properties of the Earth 10 Isostasy and Isostatic models 11 Elastic thickness calculation and the relationship between elastic thickness and seismicity 12 Heat Flow, Volcanoes and Hotspots 13 Chemical Properties of the Earth 14 Examination of crust and mantle structure
