Course Objective

Main aim of this lecture is to give some basic definitions about archaeological terminology, archaeological settlements and architectural characteristics, archaeological prospection techniques, introduction to archaeometry and archaeogeophysics as a prospection method for achaeology, archeogeophysical methods, wide and shallow scale geophysical exploration, principles of image and data processing and interpretation, archaeogeophysical equipments and softwares, global and local importance of archaeogeophysics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to have an idea about general archaeological and archaeogeophysical terminology and basic laws.
2   To be able to recognize the physical properties of the materials used in structures and architectural features.
3   To be able to have an idea about common used methods in archaeogeophysics (resistivity, GPR, magnetics).
4   To be able to have an idea about rarely used methods in archaeogeophysics (VLF, SP, microgravity, seismics, etc.).
5   To be able to discuss and interpret the measured data.
6   To be able to have an idea about local and global achaeogeophysical studies.
7   To be able to design an archaeogeophysical project proposal.

Course Contents

1 Explation the lesson generally and giving source books
2 Architectural and physical characteristics of structures in archaeological sites
3 Archaeometry, archaeogeophysics concepts, national and international laws about archaeology
4 Basic features of the equipments and softwares in archaeogeophysics
5 Case studies of electromagnetic methods (GPR) in archaeological sites
6 Case studies of electrical resistivity tomography method in archaeological sites
7 Case studies of VLF method in archaeological sites
8 Case studies of magnetic method in archaeological sites
9 Rarely applied geophysical methods (Self potential, induced polarization, gravity method) in archaeological site investigations
10 Rarely applied geophysical methods (continuous wave and random signal radar, seismic method) in archaeological site investigations, examples for local and global studies
11 Esoteric methods and emerging technologies in specific archaeological applications (metal detectors, geochemical methods, thermal sensing, radiometric methods)
12 Processing and interpretation of archaeogeophysical data
13 Importance of cultural heritage; legal phases of exploration and preservation of archaeological structures
14 Interpretation and evaluation of proposal projects

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lecture, homework/presentation, exam.
Lectures will be presented to students. Besides, students will prepare presentations from published studies in international journals in the last 3 years. Also an archaeogeophysical project will be prepared by the students.
