Course Objective

Instructing electromagnetic methods, their applications and interpretation techniques in geophysical engineering.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Electromagnetic (EM) theory, Introduction and Basic reminder, the physical properties of the EM wave and plane wave equation, Maxwell's equations and their meanings, EM waves in the material (dielectric and conductive media) diffusivity.
2 EM wave propagation, damping, wave impedance and the change in stratified media, Geophysics solution of EM waves, a uniform plane wave propagation environments, reflection and polarization of dielectric media.
3 EM wave theory in geophysics, Geophysics EM systems and properties, properties of very high and very low frequencies, the EM waves.
4 EM geophysics, natural and artificial origin of the EM methods of measurement methods and definitions of time and frequency domain.
5 Definition of VLF-EM geophysical methods, VLF measurement system and be aware of issues in practice, the transmitter features of VLF-R system, measuring purchasing techniques, definitions.
6 VLF-EM and VLF-R method applications, be aware of issues, the computer environment, data transfer and assessment techniques, interpretation, and case studies.
7 Geophysical Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) a general description of the method, equipment and land applications, the measurement techniques and characteristics of the purchase, Research (Impact) to determine the depth.
8 GPR Evaluation Method of measurement used in hiring and promotion of computer programs, computing environment, data transfer and evaluation, and interpretation of the data-processing techniques.
9 Mid-term exam
10 Introduction of Surface Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SNMR) method. Basic theory, applications, evaluation and interpretation techniques of the method.
11 Controlled Source Audio-Frequency Magnetotellurics (CSAMT), and TEM methods, presentation, measurement systems, depending on conditions, the theoretical equations and interpretation.
12 Introduction of natural-source EM methods, Magnetotelluric (MT) and Audio Magnetotelluric (AMT) method, presentation, specification and procurement techniques and applications of measurements.
13 MT and AMT method, the measured quantities and mathematical relations, apparent resistivity and phase curves, conversion to depth sounding, and TE - TM mode cross sections of artificial creation, 2D and 3D modeling, evaluation and interpretation.
14 CSAMT, TEM, MT, AMT, and other EM methods, examples and discussion of the recent studies.
