DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Art of Illumination

General Description

History

The Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Major of Art of Illumination, which is affiliated to Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, started its education in 1986-1987 academic year with the name of 'Illumination Major', and its name was changed to 'Art of Illumination Major' by YÖK in 2020. however, no change has been made in the training program. In the Major of Art of Illumination, the three basic elements of book arts, namely 'Illumination' (decoration with gold), motifs, patterns, composition training related to 'Miniature Painting and 'Lettering - Calligraphy and "Marbling' in relation to manuscript works, theoretical and practical training is provided in the field.
In addition to these practical courses on design, an important part of the Curriculum of the Major of Art of Illumination is devoted to the restoration and conservation of both paper and religious and civil architectural structures and objects. Due to the close relationship with traditional materials related to book arts, courses for "Paper Making" and "Paper Restoration and Conservation", Architectural Restoration / Conservation education, which have been developed with the aim of our department since its establishment, are applied with the content of "Architectural Decoration, Pattern, Material Analysis and Design". supported by project lessons.
Students who are eligible to study at the Major of Art of Illumination, take the "Basic Design" course, which is the common course of the Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, in the first year. Basic Design is a course that includes the formal, visual and theoretical design principles that form the basis of fine arts education. In addition, vocational courses that will form the basis for the following years are included in the curriculum. From the sophomore year, students take design and application lessons within the framework of practices with traditional materials, along with the analysis of motifs and patterns related to the art of illumination, mostly within the scope of traditional Turkish book arts.
Students can make new and original designs with the design courses they take according to the curriculum, as well as analyze the compositions in historical writings, and receive design and restoration education at a level that can complement the composition and patterns of missing or destroyed places.
The aim of the program, with the contribution of theoretical education on the history and application areas of book arts from past to present, is primarily to train competent and expert students in the classical production of Illumination, Miniature Painting and Marbling. It is aimed to create a conservation / repair awareness about "paper", which is the basic material of book arts, and to prepare new materials that will guide original designs, within the framework of applied and theoretical courses. In addition, contributing to the sustainability of preservation / restoration through pattern-composition-motif analysis seen in historical buildings and / or decorations of today's buildings is also among the aims of the program.
