Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach students the terminology of Turkish art of illumination, the relation with other discipline in book arts, the functions, drawing methods and stages of motifs in compositions, to draw compositions step by step in different forms and dimensions with regular (such as quadrangle, circle, elips, etc.) and irregular areas, to form clearand nuanced sketches with pencil.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gaining information about the terminology of Turkish Illumination Art, its features and the historical course and development of motifs and the stages of composition in the historical process.
2   Drawing features of motifs, which are the basic elements in illumination design, to be able to show them with nuances, to define and apply patterns according to their drawing features.
3   To be able to analyze compositions in different surfaces and forms according to their characteristics in illumination design.
4   To be able to show different composition analyzes and drawing methods step by step in illumination design.
5   To be able to apply plant, animal and mixed compositions according to their technical features and different areas in illumination design.
6   To be able to analyze "Kenar Suyu" compositions in illumination design.
7   To be able to draw compositions with and without nuances with a brush in the application of illumination designs.
8   It is expected that they will be able to draw patterns suitable for various composition techniques used.

1 Turkish art of illumination and examples the preparation and itntroduction of file and project materials
2 The resources releated with motifs in Turkish art of illumination and their features. Etudes on drawing with nuance and without nuance by using pencil.
3 The functions and posture feature of plant motifs in Turkish art of illumination; drawing directive motifs with pencil
4 Etude work on posture and direction of animal motifs by using pencil
5 The study of examples of semi- stylized motifs in detached and spiral manner by using pencil
6 Compositions and designs with cloud motifs.
7 The posture and drawing features of semi- stylized flower motifs.
8 The demonstration of functions,posture and drawing features of motifs (çintamani,lips,münhani) in compositions by using pencils.
9 Features of pafta (section) in compositions drawn in regular areas.
10 Analysis of compositions in Turkish art of illumination design
11 The demonstation of free start point composition technique step by step with use of pencil (in areas such as quadrangle, circle, elips.
12 Etudes of drawing different types of symmetric composition drawing techniques with the use of pencil
13 Analysis of asymmetric compositions in Turkish art of illumination design Analysis of compositions and etudes with pencil. Study of drawing techniques in compositions with contours, with the use of pencil.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In this course, the Turkish art of Illumination terminology, historical development, features and the connection with related disciplines will be explained with examples. The functions of symbolic and anatomic structure of motifs in a composition will be applied step by step, by using drawing techniques and analysis; pattern drawing styles and techniques will be covered with analyze method. Free, fractional and raport (ulama) composition styles will be applied in symmetric, asymmetric and other free formed areas, by sketching with use of pencils. About the application of these forms in different surfaces, the students will be informed.

Assessment Criteria

The course has 2 credits for theoretical knowledge and 2 credits for applications. During the semester, the attendance will be taken and there will be a midterm for students to comprehend the subjects in lessons. . In the midterm, the degree of comprehension and understanding of the subjects in given course books and also the degree of skills in applications will be evaluated. . The 30% of arithmetic mean of midterms and attendance and the 30% of the final exam will be taken in to consideration. Homework and a presentation will be expected from students. The attendance in this applied course is important so the attendance will also be evaluated. The first semester project evaluation will include the evaluation of files and project studies regarding order and diligence in design stages.In order to number of questions in the exams, the mark distributions out of 100 points will be announced before the exams and the total result will be evaluated. The homework, presentation and attendance will be evaluated out of 100 points.

Course Policies and Rules

The course begins with theoretical description, drawing with the help of visuals and personal applications about related subjects. Students who are late have right to enter the course in next half hour. Students who come to class after that time are evaluated as attended half of the class . At the beginning of the next class, stages of the works are examined, mistakes are criticized and discussed; then the students begin their new application in studios.
