General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University Computer Engineering Department was founded in 1994 by the founding head Prof. Dr. Esen ÖZKARAHAN by graduate program. The undergraduate program has started in 1995. The program language is English in undergraduate and graduate programs. In all programs, based on a relative grading system; group and individual applications, written exams with assignments and project based evaluation is used.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The purpose of the program, to ensure that the graduates play an active role in the field of computer-based information systems in each step of the life cycle, in their expertise. In addition; they are expected to be individuals that able to detect problems by observing, able to propose solutions by the literature searching in the light of the current situation and technological development, able to report and defend the results and obtained findings properly, have social anxiety, are respect for ethical values. The department has 2 ongoing Research Groups. These are Natural Language Processing Work Group (http://nlp.cs.deu.edu.tr/) and Security Research Group (http://srg.cs.deu.edu.tr/wp/). The department faculty members have publications enlisted in SCI and other edited journals. In addition, they are developing TUBITAK and TEYDEB projects. With consulting faculty members, our students have won degrees in various competitions. There are 15 faculty members and lecturers, and 9 research assistants, in the Department. There are 8 computer laboratories, 1 hardware laboratory in service of the students. Additionally, there are 5 research laboratories next to the academic staff rooms, used in thesis research of graduate students. There is also both wired and wireless network connection available for all students and instructors, in the department. The department has the capability to provide consulting services to every corporation and mainly software companies, in every field of computer sciences. The department faculty members can provide knowhow and working environment support for databases, computer networks, distance learning, natural language processing, multimedia (music and image) processing, computer security, project management, software quality, the application of latest computer technology developments, in industrial and other projects. The department is constantly developing for a more effective and modern education with its dynamic, expert staff in their fields, its education policy and its quality of incorporating worldwide changes to its education content and educational structure with regulations that are fit to the department characteristics.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates work at various positions including academic positions, at home and abroad; also can create their own businesses in various fields such as software development, computer network management and consulting, as well as working at firms specialized in these areas, and in the related departments of corporations which have an IT Department. They generally take positions in companies working in the IT or Communication technologies, R & D, Software development areas as software engineers, analysts, IT specialists, test engineers, control engineers, system managers, hardware design engineers, IT managers, network engineers, network designers, network security managers. In addition, they may take any positions as research assistants, lecturers, faculty members in computer engineering and computer science departments of universities.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5151 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory.The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades. The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme is comprised of courses (at least 67 ECTS),Ph.D.Seminar (5 ECTS), Ph. D. Research (18 ECTS) / Ph. D. Thesis (150 ECTS) courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying examination and thesis examination with a total credit of 240 ECTS. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
