General Description

History

Before the establishment of the Council of Higher Education, this program had been pursued under the name of Master Degree Program in Social Politics and Social Administration. Since the establishment of the Institution of Social Sciences at the Dokuz Eylül University in year 1982, the program has being pursued under the name of Master Degree Program in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations.This program has still been keeping on focusing on social politics. Fundamental research issues of the program are related to how the economic and social system works on global and national basis, and how the income has generated and distributed in the capitalist society. These issues are also the main points which clarify the problems related to social security, industrial relations, welfare state, social justice and equality.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

To give required knowledge, competence, scientific research method and culture to the candidates of scholarship expert who have the potential of academic study with an insight of improving the work and life satisfaction through orientating the social policies and providing social protection. There are three foreign language lessons in the curriculum. These lessons constitute 15 percent of the program.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   They have the ability to think scientifically, learn and with using know-how, reach to knowledge, evaluate and interpret the knowledge in social sciences field.
2   They have applied and theoretical knowledge in the field of Labour Economics at advanced level. They can make evaluations regarding labour market, employment, wage, income and income distribution politics and can they make suggestions.
3   They know the actors of industrial relations theoretically and practically; they can produce solutions on social justice, agreement and peace in accordance with social protection and social dialogue needs.
4   They can take theoretical and practical responsibility at macro level and in economic units to grant workers humanely working conditions and to extend social politics in practice.
5   They have the basic knowledge of science of psychology, sociology and law concerned closely with working life, they can apply and enhance this information.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the Masters Degree Program in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations can work in Ministry of Development, domestic and foreign units of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and social security institutions as inspectors and experts. They also can work as manager in other part of the management of social affairs, ministries, workers and employers organizations, state-owned enterprises.In the private sector, graduates of the Masters Degree Program in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations can work as manager and consultant in departments of industrial relations, social work and personnel management. They also can be employed as collective bargaining specialist in trade unions and employers unions.

Labour Economics and Industrial Relations master programme consists of 11 compulsory and 10 elective courses, 1 specialization field course and 1 seminar course. In each of the first two semesters, 1 optional course should be chosen from available courses. Students who have successfully completed the courses have to prepare and defend a thesis.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 56 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS) and field study (2 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
