General Description

History

DEU Maritime Faculty is the first higher education institution established under the name of the School of Maritime Management and Management within the body of Dokuz Eylul University in 1982 for maritime education in Izmir, and its main purpose is to meet the qualified manpower needs of the Turkish maritime sector. The institution was transformed into the Maritime Faculty by the decision of the Council of Ministers on 31.10.2009. The education language of the faculty is English and there is a compulsory English preparatory class. The Faculty has been holding the ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certificate approved by the Italian-based certification body RINA since 2002.

At the Higher Education General Assembly meeting of the Presidency of the Higher Education Institution dated 10.03.2006, it was decided to admit students to the Mechanical Department of the School of Maritime Business and Management at Dokuz Eylul University in the 2006-2007 academic year, to open a compulsory English preparatory class, and to make the language of instruction English. The training plan includes the requirements of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) Seafarers' Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Standards (STCW) International Convention A-III/1 and A-III/2 within the scope of engineering discipline. The training is carried out in the Tınaztepe and Urla campuses in the department, which is approved and authorized according to the IMO standards, which is obligatory for the "Line Watch Engineer" training.

Graduates receive the title of "Marine Engineer", and those who succeed in the Farway Watchkeeping Engineering exam organized by the Seafarers Exam Center of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Türkiye, are entitled to work on national and international trade ships with the qualification of "Watch Engineer".

The department was accredited by MÃœDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Education Programs) in 2019.

The curriculum of the program is updated taking into account the changes made in the STCW International Convention.

Within the body of Dokuz Eylul University, The Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, there are Maritime Transportation Systems Engineering Master's and Doctorate programs in the Marine Engineering Department.
