Course Objective

The main goal of the lecture is to give basic thermodynamics of combustion process and design principals of gas burners. The Lecture contents an introduction to first and second law analysis for chemical reactions, flames, classification of the burners, and environmental effects of combustion products.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Calculation of thermodynamic properties of ideal gas mixtures.
2   Chemical balancing of combustion reactions, defining excess air, complete and uncompleted combustion, stoichiometric reaction.
3   Applying first law analysis to combustion process; calculating enthalpy of combustion, lower and higher heating values.
4   Applying second law analysis to combustion process; calculating exergy change.
5   Classification of liquid and gas fuel burners.
6   Defining and classification of combustion emissions and precautions

1 Fuels and fundamentals of combustion process
2 Thermodynamic properties of ideal gas mixtures and calculation of enthalpy and entropy change on thermodynamical processes.
3 Humid air; definitions and an introduction to humid air processes.
4 The combustion reactions, stoichiometric reaction and excess air.
5 First law analysis of reacting systems.
6 Adiabatic flame temperature, higher and lower heating values.
7 The entropy change for a combustion process.
8 Second law analysis, exergy balance and exergy destruction.
9 Conditions of the burning and classificiation of the flames.
10 Conditions of the burning and classificiation of the flames.
11 Formation and precautions of emissions on combustion processes.
12 Principals of the liquid and gas burners (I).
13 Principals of the liquid and gas burners (II).
14 Environmental effects of combustion processes
