Course Objective

Primary purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the critical evaluation of educational research. In this course students will survey major research areas associated with the field of science education. Through reading research articles the students will be exposed to major science education researchers and their works. Another goal of this course is to familiarize students with the types of educational researches, the major methods and techniques of educational research, and elements of published research. An important aim of this course is to determine areas where further research is needed in science education. Students are expected to have knowledge of research designs, knowledge of methods of data collection, and knowledge of statistical analyses to be able to review published research articles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to identify the components of the research process as applied in published research articles.
2   Students will be introduced to research literature associated with the field of science education.
3   Students will be able to critically review science education research literature.
4   Students will be able to identify important areas in science education for future study.
5   Students will be able to write a research critique for either a qualitative or quantitative science education research article.

8 Midterm Exam
9 Critique and analyses of literature on assessment in science education- Prepare a critique of one selected source.
10 Critique and analyses of literature on instructional designs (project-based, problem-based) in science education- Prepare a critique of one selected source.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the mid-term scores. The exam dates will be indicated in the lesson plan. As the exam dates become definite, the previously announced dates may change.

Assessment Criteria

In-class participation and written homework, end-of-semester final homework and short report presentation.

Course Policies and Rules

1.It is obligated to continue to at least 70% of lessons .
2. Behaviours such as copying in exams, clashing and making intials in the publications will be concluded with the opening of a disciplinary investigation.
3.The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
