Course Objective

This course will work in depth with the string pedagogy literature (violin and viola), providing students with knowledge of the history of string pedagogy with special focus on specific method and techniques. Students will develop a wide breadth of knowledge of various pedagogical methods and a wide variety of teaching techniques on an array of string subjects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to learn the historical foundations of string pedagogy 2   Students will analyze the beginning string teaching techniques and methods. 3   Students will be able to discuss and compare the string pedagogues and their teaching methods: Suzuki, Rolland, Havas, Applebaum, Auer, Galamian, Flesh, Dounis, Flesh. 4   Students will discuss pedagogical principals of teaching string instrument playing skills including bowing, left hand and instrument position. 5   Students will be able to discuss repertoire appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced strings including method books, scale systems, etudes, solo repertoire, chamber music and string orchestra selections. 6   Discuss guidelines creating and organizing a private studio. Motivating and preparing students for concerts and recitals, and helping students with performance anxiety. 7   Review of alternative style differences and techniques. Review of basic theory and improvisation used in jazz, fiddle and blues.
