Course Objective

Fundamental statistical concepts, descriptive and inferential methods will be taught in order to have students to learn collecting, analyzing and interpreting data regarding occupational health and safety.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Fundamental statistical concepts.
2   Numerical and graphical description of series.
3   Fundamental concepts in probability.
4   Computing probabilities concerning events.
5   The concept of random variable, discrete and continuous probability distributions.
6   Sampling distribution and central limit theorem.
7   Statistical inference with one, two and more samples.
8   The concept of statistical relation and modelling.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The science of statistics, fundamental concepts of statistics.
2 Types of data, data collecting methods, graphs used for qualitative and quantitative data.
3 Measures of central tendency and variation.
4 Combinatorics, combination, permutation.
5 Sample spaces and events, union and intersection of two events, complementary events, addition rule, mutually exclusive events.
6 Probability of an event, Probability rules, Conditional probability, Bayes Theorem.
7 Midterm exam.
8 Discrete random variables and discrete probability distributions.
9 Continuous random variables and continuous probability distributions.
10 Sampling distribution, central limit theorem.
11 Confidence interval and hypothesis testing for one population mean, proportion and variance.
12 Confidence interval and hypothesis testing for two population means, proportions and variances.
13 The concept of statistical relation and introduction to regression analysis.
14 Comparing more than two groups and introduction to ANOVA.
