Course Objective

This course focuses on routes within and between urban areas and intends to discuss the extent of solutions offered by townscape elements for different scales. The course intends to make discussions upon various visual material, drawn documents and different cases.

Course Contents

1 General discussion of the subject
2 Sociological and psychological factors in route alignments
3 Priorities in route crossings and design criteria.
4 Factors that are to be taken into consideration during building up the relations between routes and points of attraction
5 Routes as separating elements between urban functions
6 The aesthetical critique regarding the functionality of innercity pedestrian and cycling ways in terms of townscape principles
7 Midterm Exam and homework assignments
8 Relationship between townscape and railroads, subway lines and light rail systems
9 Inner-city implementations. Street furniture, orientation systems, signs
10 The circulation routes passing through such urban functions that are open to pedestrian circulation as parks and urban green areas
11 Relations between landscape and transportation links on regional scale.
12 Inner-forestry routes, elements of rural landscape
13 Paper presentation

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In each semester, there will a case study area of townscape on route and the on-site researches will be accomplished. The course intends to make discussions upon various visual material, drawn documents and different cases.
