Course Objective

Biochemically elucidation of radical effects on metabolism and the diseases related with antioxidant defense systems utilised for removing the effects of radicals, mechanisms and radical interactions will be discussed by studying generation mechanisms of radicals which are of significance for metabolism.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have a knowledge about the formation mechanisms of radicals,
2   Discuss the positive and negative effects of radicals on functioning of the metabolism,
3   Have a knowledge about and discuss the defense systems which eliminate negative effects of radicals and their mechanisms,
4   Discuss repair mechanisms of damaged molecules by radicals,
5   Aware of the importance of antioxidants in ageing and struggling with diseases.

Assessment Criteria

Meaningful learning of the basic concepts given in presentations, association of concepts with each other, establishing the cause-result relationships and making comments by using the information available for problems and evaluating idea generation are carried out with mid-term, final and resit exams, active participation to the lecture, homework.
